This model predicts that t(8;21) would be an early event in myeloid leukemogenesis. Indeed, retrospective studies of neonatal blood spots reveal the presence of the t(8;21) translocation in patients that went on to develop myeloid leukemia, and cord blood samples identify the t(8;21) translocation at an incidence that is approximately 100-fold greater than the incidence of myeloid leukemia in the general population [69, 112]. These findings suggest that the translocation fusion protein acts as an initiator in myeloid leukemia pathogenesis.
